The three people who did the most to advance the state of game graphics during my time as an FPS player were John Carmack (Doom, Quake), Tim Sweeney (Unreal) and Jason Jones (Marathon, Halo). As a college kid hacking in Perl and reading Slashdot, these guys were my heroes. John Carmack said a few years ago that we're in "the golden age of triangle rendering". These three did a lot to usher in that age.
My friend at Bungie finagled me copies of the original Marathon and Marathon 2 games signed by the lead developer: Jason Jones. I'm very stoked. Marathon was, I think, the first 3D first-person-shooter for the Mac ever. I once had a nightmare that included the aliens for that game.
Thanks, Matt for the awesome gift!
And if Jason Jones ever reads this: Thanks for the awesome. Period.
(fanboy misspelling is reference to "Eat It Vid Boi" level of original Marathon game)
